Milton Keynes is a large town in Buckinghamshire, in the south east of England, about 49 miles (79 km) north-west of London. The site was deliberately located equidistant from London, Birmingham, Leicester, Oxford and Cambridge with the intention that it would be self-sustaining and eventually become a major regional centre in its own right. This makes Milton Keynes an excellent base for tourists wanting to explore several different cities in the UK or for visitors working in nearby Northampton.
Milton Keynes itself has a fantastic range of activities ranging from great shopping, excellent live entertainment, and even some extreme sports activities for the more adventurous. Willen Lake offers various different water sports including sailing, canoeing, kayaking and power boating. Visitors to the town should take in Xscape Milton Keynes. They offer both an indoor ski slope and indoor ski diving. Combined with various shops, restaurants and bars there is a plethora of different activities to take in.
Milton Keynes also has a multitude of live entertainment venues including the Milton Keynes Bowl for live music which has played host to and the 1,400 seat Milton Keynes Theatre opened in 1999. The theatre has an unusual feature: the ceiling can be lowered closing off the third tier (gallery) to create a more intimate space for smaller scale productions. There are further performance spaces in Bletchley, Wolverton, Leadenhall, Shenley Church End, Stantonbury and Walton Hall.
